canonical modernist novel by irish author james joyce. takes place over a single day (june 16, 1904) and establishes paralells between its main characters and those of homer's greek epic the odyssey. parts of the novel were first serialized an american journal, the little review, between march 1918 and december 1920, before it was fully published in 1922 in paris. its inclusion of sexual elements resulted in a smattering of negative reviews and an american obscenity trial; today the book is regarded as the foremost work of modernist literature.
